SUMMARY:UCU rally on day one of strike action against USS\, Grey's Monument Newcastle
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nucu.org.uk/strikeforuss\n  \nSpeakers include: \n\nTUC Regional Secretary\, Beth Farhat\nUCU Newcastle University branch Vice Chair\, Matt Perry\nUCU Head of Higher Education\, Paul Bridge\nUnite Regional Officer\, Dave Telford\nUCU Durham University\, Sarah Elton\n\nAssemble at Grey’s Monument from 12pm. Rally starts at 12.30pm. \n  \n\n  \nWHY WE ARE STRIKING \nWe are university staff and members of the University and College Union (UCU) and we are taking strike action to defend our right to a fair pension. University\nemployers want to end guaranteed pensions and reduce retirement income for all. \n  \nMEMBERS STRIKING IN OUR REGION \n\nDurham University\nNewcastle University\nThe Open University\n\n  \nPENSIONS UNDER ATTACK \nUniversity staff have always accepted pay levels that are lower than comparably skilled professions\, partly because we had a decent pension. Now our right to a well-earned retirement is under attack. \n  \nWHAT EMPLOYERS’ HARDLINE PROPOSALS WOULD MEAN \n\nFinal pensions would depend on how the stock market performs not on contributions.\nA reduction in retirement benefits by between 20% and 40% depending on grade and length of service. A typical lecturer stands to lose around £10\,000 a year.\nThe worst pensions in the education sector\, far worse than those available to both school teachers and staff in ‘new’ universities.\nA recruitment and retention crisis as staff seek better financial security elsewhere.\n\n  \nSTRIKING IS ALWAYS A LAST RESORT \nNo education professional wants to strike but we also deserve long-term security and our students deserve staff who are able to focus fully on the job. We have called for extended negotiations with the employers but\, disappointingly\, talks ended with the changes being imposed. \nStaff feel angry and betrayed but even now we call on university leaders to work with us to find a solution and avoid widespread disruption for our students. \n  \nPLEASE SUPPORT OUR STRIKE \nUCU members voted overwhelmingly for this action on the highest turnout this union has seen. We have been left with no choice but to take strike action and to withdraw the goodwill that the university relies upon but that has been taken for granted. \n  \nStand with us and support our strike for a fair pension. \nRead the latest on the USS strike action: ucu.org.uk/strikeforuss \n  \n\n  \nAre you a student at Durham\, Newcastle or the Open University?\nTo help avoid the strikes and protect staff pensions please write to your university asking them to resume national negotiations with UCU immediately. \nOnline form to contact Durham University \nOnline form to contact Newcastle University \nOnline form to contact The Open University \n  \n\n  \nAre you a parent of a child studying at Durham or Newcastle University?\nTo help avoid the strikes and protect staff pensions please write to the head of your child’s university asking them to resume national negotiations with UCU immediately. \nOnline form to contact Durham University  \nOnline form to contact Newcastle University \n  \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:FE National Recruitment Week : w/c 6th March 2017
DESCRIPTION:Message to FE branches from Sarah Parry\, Branch Development Organiser:\n\n\nAs you know\, UCU’s next recruitment week is coming up in week commencing 6 March\, and in addition to ongoing recruitment and organising activity in your college\, I would like to talk to you about your plans for this week. \nThe focus of the coming recruitment week will be on aiming to get literature into the hands of every potential UCU member in your college. This could involve you and other reps or active members in your workplace organising a ‘rota’ of times when you can talk to potential members and hand them one of our joining leaflets. You could also have a stall in a ‘staff area’ if that is better suited to your college. I can help with this if you would like\, and can also organise getting you the relevant items you need\, such as pens and the leaflets themselves. \nPlease let me know when is best for me to come and have a chat to you about this in the next week or so\, or I would be grateful if you could let me know if you have already made plans or have ideas for recruitment week.

SUMMARY:Further Education Non-lecturers National Reference Group : 17th February\, London or by Skype
DESCRIPTION:Message from Andrew Harden\, UCU Head of Further Education\nUCU has many members in Further Education colleges that are a part of the teaching and assessing team\, vital to the delivery of curriculum to students but who are not lecturers. There are a growing proliferation of names and titles for these staff such as instructor\, tutor\, facilitator\, progression coach\, trainer\, assessor\, learning support assistant\, teaching assistant to name but a few. These staff may be either college based or in workplace based learning environments\, their roles vary considerably as do their terms and conditions of employment. What these staff do have in common is that they have student facing roles that are part of the curriculum delivery of a college. \nUCU has developed bargaining and negotiations guidance for branches to develop a branch level bargaining agenda to improve the terms and conditions for these staff which can be found here: ucu.org.uk/non-lecturers. \nUCU’s FE National Negotiators want to include an element in the FE England 2017/18 Joint Trade Unions Pay and Conditions Claim that seeks to improve the terms and conditions for non-lecturer members. The UCU national negotiators have agreed to consider advice regarding what that claim might look like from a reference group made up of non-lecturer members to assist in formulating this element of the national claim. \nBranches are invited to send a representative member to a national reference group meeting who are not in lecturer roles or who have bargained on behalf of members in these roles to help with the formulation of the national claim for these staff. The meeting will be held: \n2pm – 4pm\, Friday 17 February either at UCU’s London offices (Carlow Street\, London NW1 7LH). There will by the option for joining the meeting remotely via Skype or telephone conference. \nPlease indicate your attendance to David Bussell dbussell@ucu.org.uk. If attending remotely via skype please arrange a test run with David prior to the meeting day and allow to join the meeting up to 45 minutes early so we can resolve any technical glitches on the day. \n  \n  \n\n  \nRegional Office video conferencing facility\nA reminder that the Regional Office has a video conference room which allows up to 12 people to attend online meetings via Skype. If using the Regional Office facility you will not need to do any setting up or do a test call to Head Office. Emma Alexander will set up the conference call and provide technical assistance on the day. \nUCU Regional Official Iain Owens will be attending the meeting via Skype from the Regional Office. If you would like to join Iain please contact Emma Alexander. \nA reminder that visitor car parking is located at the side of the office block. Directions and full details of visitor car parking at ucunorthern.org.uk/map \n  \n\n
