As a workplace representative you are entitled to reasonable paid time off to attend UCU training. If you experience any difficulties obtaining time off please contact the Regional Office. \n  \nIt is important that each branch is represented so\, please\, register as soon as possible online at eventbrite.co.uk/ucu-branch-briefing-equal-pay \n  \n

SUMMARY:Durham Teaching Assistants lobby & rally\, Durham
DESCRIPTION:  \nUNISON press release on 31st October 2016: \nTeaching assistants in Durham will take strike action on 8 and 9 November in the long-running dispute over cuts to their pay\, their union UNISON has announced today (Monday). \nThis follows a ballot over Durham County Council plans to move teaching assistants to term-time pay. This could see school support staff lose up to 23% of their wages. \nThe vote on whether to move to industrial action was put to the workforce – who are mostly women – on Thursday 6 October. Ninety-three percent of UNISON members who responded voted for strike action. \nThe ballot was carried out against a backdrop of intimidation by the council which has threatened to sack and re-employ teaching assistants who are UNISON members on a worse deal than those given to other employees\, says the union. \nUNISON general secretary Dave Prentis said: “No one should ever have to face a salary cut of almost a quarter. These staff have been treated appallingly. Teaching assistants will be showing just how strongly they feel about this next week and they will have their union and community standing beside them.” \nUNISON northern regional secretary Clare Williams said: “Nobody wants to see schools closed and teaching assistants on picket lines\, but until Durham Council drops its plan to slash their salaries\, that’s inevitable. It’s unacceptable that staff who look after children in County Durham are being treated this way – the council needs to think again.” \nUNISON Durham County branch secretary Neville Hancock said: “Teaching assistants are a vital part of our schools and should be treated accordingly. It’s time for the council to change its plan and abandon these horrendous pay cuts.”\n– A lobby will take place at Durham County Hall at 9am on Wednesday 9 November\, then Dave Prentis will speak at a rally at the Miners Association\, Redhills\, at noon.\n– UNISON balloted a total of 1\,755 teaching assistants. For legal reasons\, the union had to conduct two separate ballots – one for employees in faith schools and another for those directly employed by the council.\n– Ninety-three per cent of county council employees who voted backed strike action. The figure was the same for those working in faith schools.\n– Councillors voted in May to dismiss the classroom assistants and re-employ them on new term-time contracts. \nMedia contacts:\nAllison Jackson T: 0191 245 0805 M: 07852 292864 E: a.jackson2@unison.co.uk\nAnthony Barnes T: 0207 121 5255 M: 07834 864794 E: a.barnes@unison.co.uk\nAlan Weaver T: 0207 121 5555 M: 07939 143310 E:a.weaver@unison.co.uk

SUMMARY:HE strike rally : Monument\, Newcastle. Thursday 26th May 1pm
DESCRIPTION:UCU has confirmed plans for a two-day national strike at UK universities as part of an ongoing dispute over pay.  UCU members in higher education will walk out on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 May. Staff will also begin working to contract from 25 May\, which means they will refuse to work overtime\, set additional work or undertake any voluntary duties like covering timetabled classes for absent colleagues. \n\n\n\nThe dispute has arisen following a pay offer of 1.1% from the employer body\, the Universities and Colleges Employers’ Association (UCEA).  UCU general secretary\, Sally Hunt said: ‘Members in higher education have sent a clear message to employers that\, after six years of real-terms pay cuts amounting to 14.5%\, they will not tolerate a continued squeeze on their income. Industrial action which impacts on students is never taken lightly\, but staff feel that they have been left with no alternative.’ \nFor details of our region’s strike action please see ucunorthern.org.uk/he-strike-may2016 \nFor information on the national action please see national UCU website \n  \nShow your support at our regional rally: \n\n\nThursday 26th May\, 1pm\nGrey’s Monument\, Newcastle\n  \nPlease assemble at Grey’s Monument\, Newcastle at 12.30pm.  The rally will start at 1pm. \nSpeakers  include: \n\nUCU Head of HE\, Paul Bridge\nPCS Regional Secretary\, Simon Elliott\nUCU Regional Secretary\, Emma-Jane Phillips.  Emma-Jane is also Branch Secretary at UCU Northumbria University branch.\nJoint Branch Secretary at UNISON Teesside University\, and Chair of the Higher Education Service Group Executive\, Denise Ward\nUCU Regional Chair\, Terry Murphy\n\nCome and show your support for Higher Education staff.  Please bring branch banners and UCU flags. \nWe urgently require volunteer stewards.  The main roles of stewards are to ensure members of the public (e.g. shoppers) can get past the rally without problems\, to report any potential Health & Safety / security issues to the Head Steward\, and to help clear the area of post-rally debris.  Please contact Emma Alexander to volunteer. \nWe would be grateful if you could help promote the rally.  The below links will be of use: \n\nDownload the rally poster\nRT one of @UCUNorthern tweets about the rally\, for example this one\nShare one of UCUNorthern’s facebook posts about the rally\, for example this one\n\n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Loading...\n \n \n \n \n \n Taking too long?\n \n \n \n Reload document \n |\n \n Open in new tab \n \n \n \n Download \n

SUMMARY:UCU National Recruitment Week : w/c 16th May 2016
DESCRIPTION:Following the success of February’s NRW2 which saw an 80% increase in new members compared with the same week last year\, now is the time to begin preparations for NRW3\, taking place 16th – 22nd May. \nIt doesn’t have to be a massive event\, it might just be a small stall at lunch time or visiting staff rooms to talk to people while distributing materials. \nThe region will shortly have a “Tell us what matters” recruitment stall activity campaign kit for use by branches. We expect to have the campaign kit ready and available for use during NRW3. Your branch might like to purchase your own campaign kit (£41). To check availability of the region’s campaign kit please contact Emma Alexander. \nRecruitment stalls are also the ideal opportunity to encourage members to take part in the quick and easy “I’m in the union because…” online photograph campaign and to spread awareness of our region’s online presence via our UCU business cards \nWhy not combine the campaigns for a high impact method of engaging with members and non-members?  ucunorthern.org.uk/category/campaigns \nUCU Head Office will be providing you with printed materials. \nIf the Regional Office can provide you with any assistance\, including a member of staff attending your event\, please contact Emma Alexander.  Whatever your branch is doing\, please let Emma Alexander know your plans\, including days\, times and venues. \nLets make NRW3 even more successful than NRW2!\n

SUMMARY:UCU Pay Briefing : Thursday 25th February\, Leeds
DESCRIPTION:A special meeting of the Higher Education Committee (HEC) took place on Wednesday 13th January. The purpose of the meeting was to agree the next steps in the pay campaign 2016/17. \nHEC had a focused discussion covering the following factors: \n\nThe shape of the claim for 2016/17\nThe timing of the claim’s submission\, the negotiating timetable and\, if necessary\, actions in support of the claim\nThe position of other trade unions in respect of the above\nBuilding the campaign among members\nLegislative changes (the Trade Union Bill)\n\nIn line with the decisions made at the October meeting\, HEC confirmed that the claim will be submitted during the first week in February. \nPay and pay equality claim \nHEC approved the development of a focused pay claim based on the principles of pay catch up and keep up\, which may be a headline number. HEC also expressed a view that any final offer must ensure that changes to the governemnt’s approach to the living wage does not result in distributive bargaining by the employers to reduce the amount on offer to those above the living wage floors. \nUCU will be also be looking for a claim for action to close the gender pay gap in higher education as well as action to reduce the sector’s reliance on forms of casual employment. \nThe HE trade unions meet on Tuesday 19 January to seek to agree a joint claim. \nPay Campaign \nHEC approved a pay campaign that will focus on the cumulative loss in members’ pay\, the projected cost of living increases over the next 18 months\, pay inequality and gender pay\, the stark contrast with senior pay\, casualisation\, the sector’s level of income and reserves and work intensification/ workload. \nBranches are reminded of the link to the recent HE news which covered some of these campaign themes. \nhttp://www.ucu.org.uk/media/pdf/k/s/ucu_henews42_nov15.pdf \nBranches are also advised to look out for the latest UCU report on VC\, Principal and senior pay\, which is due out in early February. \nTimetable for action \nAn outline timetable for a ballot and action in support of the claim was agreed. The national negotiators were charged with refining the approach. HEC approved a timetable that enables a ballot and action to start in April. The timetable will form the basis of direct consultation with members and branches during February. \nConsulting members and branches \nHEC approved means to consult branches and members. \nTo start\, a series of regional / devolved nation pay briefings have been arranged for February. At the briefings\, branches will discuss the campaign and provide feedback on the proposed timetable for action. Details of the four briefings are found in the circular emailed to HE branches on 19th January. \nBranches should make every effort to participate in these briefings as they will inform the decisions of the HEC when it meets on Friday 4 March to decide the next steps in the HE pay and campaign.\nIt is important that your branch sends at least one representative to one of the briefings advertised in the circular emailed to branches.  Branches may send up to two representatives. \n HE branches in the Northern Region are encouraged to attend the Leeds briefing (25th February) or the Glasgow briefing (24th February). \nRegister for the Leeds briefing online \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Event starts at 5pm. \nIntroduced by Daniel Kebede \nFollowed at 6pm by a discussion of the issues raised by responses to the European refugee crisis and organising for United Nations International Anti-Racism Day on 19th March. \n\n\nBlack and minority ethnic (BME) workers make up a large part of UCU’s membership and share the same concerns as any other education professionals. However BME workers continue to face unique challenges in further and higher education and there is evidence that they have to work harder to get a job\, face greater resistance to career progression and continue to experience discrimination and racism at work. \nRacism in the workplace deepens the impact of the problems that all staff face – for example redundancies\, reorganisation\, pay freezes – so challenging discrimination is a crucial part of UCU’s work.  The union tackles discrimination both on an individual basis – supporting individual members experiencing problems – and collectively. challenging racism within organisations and across the post-school education sector. \nSee the UCU national website ucu.org.uk/equality   and \nthe UCU regional website ucunorthern.org.uk/bme \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Loading...\n \n \n \n \n \n Taking too long?\n \n \n \n Reload document \n |\n \n Open in new tab \n \n \n \n Download \nchallenging racism UCU Day Poster Ncl uni
