2016 Model local branch rules : Action required

Branches will have received the message from Head Office regarding branches adopting the 2016 model local rules. Head Office provided branches with a copy of the new model local rules in July ucu.org.uk/ucurules

Head Office reminds branches that it is essential that we are able to demonstrate that every UCU branch or local association has in place local rules consistent with the Congress model.  There are five main reasons:

  • It is a legal requirement
  • It is a result of a democratic decision of the union’s policy-making body
  • It is a requirement of the union’s financial auditors and Trustees
  • It is necessary to protect the union from complaints and to defend its autonomy in the face of the greatly increased powers conferred on the Certification Officer by Sections 16-21 of the Trade Union Act 2016.
  • It is a core element of the democratic ethos and practice of the union.

In order for us to gain a complete picture of current progress, Sally Hunt has asked all branches to complete a brief online survey, letting us know the steps that you have made or plan to make in adopting rules consistent with the model. Please complete the survey by 27 January https://yoursay.ucu.org.uk/s3/Model-local-rules-2016

Help and advice about the adoption of local rules is available from UCU Head Office and UCU Regional Administrator, Emma Alexander.
