Where next for the North East’s public services & economy? : 23rd January

23 January 2016 @ 11:30 am - 4:00 pm

The North East of England has seen unemployment rise by a staggering 18,000 in the last 6 months while ministers declare we are ‘all in this together’ and enjoying an economic recovery. The loss of jobs in Teesside has caused real alarm and the impact on that community cannot be underestimated. Meanwhile public sector workers throughout the region stand to lose their job in 2016 as services are slashed further following the Conservative Government’s Comprehensive Spending Review. We are clear that the government is ideologically obsessed with attacking public services, public sector workers and trade unions who defend them.

This is why the Northern TUC and Northern Public Services Alliance is holding an emergency summit on Saturday 23rd January to address the crisis facing public services and the jobs lost on Teesside. We are pleased to be joined by Professor Karel Williams a leading academic opposing outsourcing of public services, Alex Cunningham MP for Stockton North responding to issues in the government’s Comprehensive Spending Review and Anna Turley MP for Redcar who will be discussing where the steel campaign goes next. There will be workshops and other speakers will be confirmed in the new year. This event will be part of a week’s activity from the Northern Public Services Alliance highlighting the impact of government policies on our region’s public services.
