Agreed joint statement from the University of Sunderland and the University and College Union (UCU)

Lecturer to Senior Lecturer Progression Process

In April 2025, the University Executive agreed to implement a new process for Lecturer to Senior Lecturer progression. The following month, UCU declared a dispute on this issue.

For the last few months, the university and the union have engaged in talks and communications with a view to reaching an agreement. We are pleased to announce that we have done so now. The agreement (link here) ends the dispute.

Both parties remain committed to ensuring the continuing future success of the University and a top-quality student experience and are committed to continue working together.

Professor Helen Driscoll, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) said, “We are pleased to have reached this agreement with UCU and remain committed to constructive engagement with our recognised trade unions. The agreement provides greater clarity around opportunities for Lecturers to progress to Senior Lecturer roles, including how vacancies will normally be advertised. It also reinforces our shared commitment to ensuring Lecturers have access to high-quality development opportunities to support their progression.”

Jon Bryan, Regional Support Official, UCU (Northern) said: “Our members were disappointed last year when the university implemented a policy without agreement. We are pleased to have an agreed process in place now. Academics at the University of Sunderland will continue to look for support from senior managers for progression and development in their career, which they need to provide a good education to their students.”
