Statement from the UCU Branch Committee at the University of Sunderland on the visit of Boris Johnson

The indication that the Conservative Cabinet is to meet on the University campus was a shock to Sunderland University UCU (University and College Union).

Following on from the announcement that our University is closing courses in History, Politics, Languages, Public Health and Environmental Health – and threatening 34 jobs – this was more bad news for our members to hear.

The Conservatives have been behind the austerity programme of the last ten years, which has impacted drastically on our local area. The closure of our public libraries in Sunderland has had a devastating effect.

The Conservative Party record on Higher Education is no better – trebling tuition fees and increasing private sector involvement in the sector has had a deleterious effect.

It is no surprise that this has been kept a secret – the Conservative Cabinet is not welcome here.
